Curling commenced in New Brunswick in the year 1854 with the formation of a curling club in Fredericton, our capital city. Saint John, |
Moncton and Newcastle soon followed this lead when they too constructed natural ice rinks which quickly resulted in many friendly interclub competitions. |
In 1886 a meeting was held in Moncton for the purpose of forming a New Brunswick Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club of Scotland. |
Mr. E. Hutchinson of Bathurst was elected President but the Branch was terminated in 1891 because of a lack of interest. As curling continued to grow in popularity |
and more clubs were founded the need for a provincial organization was again recognized. Therefore, in 1913 another attempt was made to reactivate the defunct |
body when a meeting elected Mr. J.A. Sinclair of the Thistle Curling Club in Saint John as the new President. This renewed effort also faltered |
basically because of the outbreak of the First World War. In 1921 a determined Mr. Sinclair and other dedicated curlers established |
a new Branch organization. On May 13, 1989 the two provincial curling associations, Ladies' and Men's, became the first in Canada |
to amalgamate their two governing bodies. This development has been very successful thus ensuring the continued growth and development of the game |
throughout the entire province. In 1921 there were eleven clubs affiliated with the N.B. Branch. In 1934, serious discussions took place |
in Toronto in regards to the establishing of a national curling association. In 1935 the Dominion Curling Association was founded with our provincial Branch |
being one of the founding members. Indeed our delegate to the founding meetings, Mr. E. P. MacKay of Bathurst, |
took such a leading role in promoting this development that he was elected,to the position of First Vice President. |
Five persons from our province have served with distinction as President of the national body which |
is now named the Canadian Curling Association after becoming an amalgamated association in 1990. |
